Residents and officials reported a man killed when a major fire at a suburban Detroit warehouse that contained combustible things erupted, rocked homes, and rained debris a mile distant Monday night.
A Clinton Township warehouse that sold vaporizer pens, smoke shop supplies, and convenience and dollar store goods was searched for butane and nitrous oxide canisters on Tuesday evening. "We know they were not allowed to have these canisters," township emergency management coordinator Paul S. Brouwer said Tuesday night at a press briefing. "They were not permitted to have them in this building."
The 19-year-old killed Wednesday night was Turner Lee Salter, according to Macomb County Corporation Counsel. After the 8:50 p.m. blast, officials said he was at a nearby car wash watching canisters rain on the community. Officials said the man died in the hospital after being hit in the head. Clinton Township Fire Chief Tim Duncan said “due to the hundreds, if not thousands of explosions” firefighters had trouble entering.
25 canisters were found 2 kilometers distant early Tuesday evening, officials said. They warned that inhabitants were gathering explosive and hazardous keepsakes. Officials evacuated all warehouse workers, including web-based salespeople, for safety.
Rescuers were called to Select Distributors and Goo, a vape and nitrous oxide distributor, at 8:50 p.m. Its website says Select Distributors sells vape products, nitrous gas, CBD oils, and novelty items to dollar stores.
Select Distributors sells wholesale butane in 12–20-canister boxes with 10 ounces of gas.Butane is used to refill lighters and extract butane hash oil, which can deliver extreme highs when smoked, vaped, or eaten. Illegal cannabis concentrate makers spray butane into marijuana cylinders.
Multiple explosions have occurred, often in unauthorized home labs. Distributors sell unregulated nitrous oxide. The FDA allows it as a medication and propellant and aerator in dairy products, especially whipped cream. The Select Distributors website lists Goo Power Hitter nitrous.
Fuel at vape shops and adult bookstores can explode. A rocket oxygenator accident at Mojave Air and Space Port in 2007 killed three people. A recreational nitrous oxide distributor in suburban Detroit was convicted of mislabeling cylinders that year.
