Although fresh avocados can be frozen, they need preparation to retain their texture and color. Properly freezing avocados:
For freezing, choose ripe but firm avocados. Avocados that are overripe may freeze mushy.
Cut the avocados in half and remove the pit. Put the flesh in a basin after scooping it.
Lemon Juice: Sprinkle lemon juice on avocado flesh to avoid browning. Lemon juice acid prevents enzymatic browning.
Mash or Puree (Optional): Blend or mash avocados depending on how you'll utilize them. This step is optional but makes thawed avocados easier to use in smoothies or dips.
Portion and Pack: Put mashed or pureed avocado in airtight containers or freezer bags. Leave space at the top of the container or bag for freezing expansion. Try ice cube trays for smaller avocado portions.
Label, Freeze: Write the date and contents on the containers or bags and close tightly. Put them in the freezer until firm.
Avocados can be used in smoothies, guacamole, and salads after freezing. Frozen avocados work best in dips and spreads, where their creamy texture is less evident.
